It was almost destiny that former No.1 overall pick and Washington Wizards legendJohn Wall was the franchise representative on Sunday when the team won the NBA Draft Lottery for the first time in over a decade.

With Washington holding the rights to the top pick this offseason, the Wizards seemingly have a clear goal in mind for the first time since Wall's early days in D.C.

Washington’s wavering ideas left the team in disarray

For the better part of a decade, it has felt like the Wizards have been one foot in wishing to contend and another in rebuilding, which, in turn, has led the organization to handle both poorly.

One example includes the team's mismanagement of the John Wall trade in 2020 to acquire Russell Westbrook, to pair with, at the time, franchise star Bradley Beal, when, in retrospect, they probably should have looked for picks/young players in return.

In addition, trading both Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija could both be viewed as premature decisions that have come back to bite the organization due to their inability to carve out a clear path as an organization.

Drafting a Player with the potential of AJ Dybantsa removes the mixed signals from the organization

Attaining the first overall pick in the loaded 2026 NBA Draft completely removes uncertainty from the Wizards as an organization going forward. The indecisiveness arose because, since Wall, this team has not had a true homegrown game-changing prospect.

With the selections of recent lottery picks from the Wiz, like the aforementioned Rui Hachimura, and Deni Avdija, or even more recently with the selections of Alex Sarr, and Tre Johnson, who, while really good, are not faces of a franchise who will carry the mantel as the single player you build your team around.

Well, AJ Dybantsa is. The 6’9” do-it-all wing from BYU makes the Wizards' path obvious for the next decade plus if it wasn’t already.

Leading the country in scoring as a freshman, Dybantsa brings an immediate impact on both ends of the floor that will shape the fabric of the Washington Wizards going forward. Along with being known as an incredibly high-character guy off the court, AJ is a vocal leader the Wizards desperately need.

With how must see he is, I think more National TV coverage, and National games are naturally on the way for the Wiz as well, for the foreseeable future.

Dybantsa’s level of play on court matched with his personality, and lucking into this first pick has forced the Wizards to pick a lane, and it is one that should make fans very excited for the first time in a long time.
