Wizards set to open their NBA Cup journey against Hawks (and why the team should have confidence)
By John Canady
The Washington Wizards are in the midst of a six-game losing streak as the team continues to search for a winning recipe with their new look squad.
Despite their current losing skid, Washington has shown glimpses all season long unjust how effective their young squad can be. Each night it seems as if one player steps up and shows a skillset the Wizards have been hoping to see for their young group. Unfortunately, the problem has been when one player steps up, others seem to step back.
With little to no consistency, the Wizards sit at a 2-8 record with the NBA Cup set to begin. And while Washington enters group play with little to no expectations, they have a chance to start the In-Season Tournament group play with a win to snap their losing streak.
And I know what you’re thinking; how can the Wizards randomly get back in the win column? Well despite their slow start, they have one thing going for them ahead of Friday night’s matchup.
Wizards two wins have been against Atlanta
As said above, the Wizards have won only two games this season. At one point, Washington sat at .500 with a 2-2 record. That time came after the Wizards played the Hawks in back-to-back nights at the start of the season.
Washington turned their luck around and went from 0-2 to 2-2 with consecutive wins against Atlanta. Fortunately for Washington, they’ll have a chance to get things turned around again with a road trip to battle the Hawks.
If the Wizards can get back in the win column, it could give Brian Keefe’s team some confidence moving forward and in this league, confidence can go a long way. One win is all the Wiz needs to get things turned around. If they can take one game at a time, their season is not too far gone to turn things around.
However, in a pivotal year for a rebuild, the Wizards could be more enticed to win the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes than they are to win regular season games in a season that likely means the worst for their future if they overachieve.
Although fans of the Wizards patience is running low for their favorite team to exit their mediocre point of the rebuild, Washington could be better off losing multiple games at a time. Nonetheless, we’ll see where the state of the organization is when they match up against the Hawks who have shown they’re very beatable.
