POINT GUARD

John Wall vs. Kyrie Irving

The ongoing debate between who’s the better of these two players remains one of the hotter topics in the NBA world.

From an unbiased standpoint, Kyrie Irving is undoubtedly a better scorer than John Wall. Irving is arguably the best ball-handler and finisher in the NBA, capable of getting to the rim and finishing with either hand. Irving also has the advantage over Wall as a shooter, both from mid-range and three point.

But after that, it’s hard to argue Irving is better than Wall in any other facet. Wall is a significantly better playmaker and defender, and even rebounder. Irving is an isolation, shoot-first point guard. While he’s elite in this area, he does little to make his teammates better. On the other hand, John Wall is a world-class distributor. Routinely averaging 10+ APG, Wall is exceptional at setting up his teammates for scoring opportunities.

On the defensive end, Irving is a sieve. He struggles to defend in both isolation and P&R situations, and is a liability when it comes to slowing down his opponent. Talent wise, Wall is an All-NBA caliber defender. When engaged, his length and athleticism make him one of the better perimeter defenders in the league. While he tends to be inconsistent, he’s light years ahead of Irving on defense.

On the surface, its close. But from a standpoint of basketball, it’s not really that close.

Advantage: John Wall.
