Marcin Gortat vs. Tristian Thompson

This is a surprisingly dicey debate.

Judging based off of the numbers, Marcin Gortat comes off as the better player. He averages more points (10.8 to 8.1), rebounds (10.4 to 9.2), and is a significantly better free throw shooter (64.8% to 49.8%). But these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.

It should be said that Gortat also averages more minutes and almost three more FGA per game. While both players are the 5th scoring options in their respective lineups, Gortat gets more opportunities and has a more featured role in the offense.

Tristan Thompson shoots a higher percentage from the field, averages more blocks, and less turnovers. Gortat averages more rebounds, but Thompson plays next to an elite rebounder in Kevin Love, who takes away some of his opportunities.

Overall, Gortat is a slightly more polished player on offense and Thompson is more effective as a defender. If this were based off age and potential, Thompson would get the edge. But it’s not. Alas, too close to call.
