Washington Wizards forward Kelly Oubre Jr. has as much potential as anyone on the roster. His athleticism and skill are unquestionable, but he’s been inconsistent in applying them on the court throughout his first two seasons. With his contract expiring in two-seasons, and him eligible to sign an extension next summer, Oubre will be out to prove he belongs this season.
This is a big year for Kelly Oubre‘s development.
After having a somewhat underwhelming rookie year in which he averaged just 3.7 PPG, Oubre improved in his sophomore season. Playing almost ten more minutes per game, he nearly doubled his scoring average. He was also more active on the glass, averaging 3.3 rebounds in comparison to 2.1 the year before. These numbers are encouraging, but they don’t tell the whole story.

He demonstrated little growth as a ball-handler and playmaker, still unable to effectively create off-the-dribble. His shooting remains streaky, which is problematic when playing alongside John Wall. His three-point shooting actually regressed, efficiency wise.
But these things can all be improved. Oubre routinely puts in the offseason work to become better, as evidenced by him working out with Wall and LeBron James this summer. Will it pay off this season? Wizards fans would sure like to see so.
With that being said, let’s set some realistic goals for Kelly Oubre Jr. this upcoming season.
