The Washington Wizards are still evaluating their options ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft, and there's still plenty of time to do so.

Washington has a major decision to make with their top pick, especially considering whoever they opt to add will be the new face of the franchise moving forward.

The team's decision won't be easy, but with the recent comments from AJ Dybantsa in an exchange with former Wizards icon Gilbert Arenas, it may be exactly what general manager Will Dawkins and the rest of the team's decision makers needed to hear to help decipher what's best for the organization.

AJ Dybantsa's counter to Gilbert Arenas proves he has the right mindset

In a recent episode of the Gil's Arena Show, Arenas sat down with projected top pick AJ Dybantsa to discuss the upcoming draft, where he could land, who he hopes to play in the league, and everything in between.

Of the abundance of interesting comments Arenas made, the former Wizards star suggested that if he had Dybantsa's body/athleticism, he would be "the greatest ever."

Considering how good Arenas was, it's not a completely wild comment, but it does prove that Arenas may have cared more about his individual stats than team success.

The good news? It doesn't seem like Dybantsa is built that way, and that should be music to the Wizards' ears.

Following Arenas' claim that he would've been the greatest ever with Dybantsa's build, the projected top pick hit the NBA legend with a reality check that speaks volumes about his character.

“Would you win, though? Winning counts," Dybantsa said with a straight face. "Would you win games or be the best scorer ever?"

Dybantsa clearly cares about winning, and his mindset that individual stats don't mean anything unless it leads to winning says a lot about the leader he plans to be at the next level.

That alone, should answer the Wizards question about who to draft at No. 1.

AJ Dybantsa is the Wizards guy

Dybantsa's talent is undeniable; he has real MVP potential, and that's enough for the Wizards to select him at No. 1.

However, with the culture the Wizards are building, character matters, and it's clear that Dybantsa has the mindset that every team would hope their franchise player would have.

The BYU star wants to be the best, but being the best doesn't mean anything to him if it doesn't help his team win.

Washington can't overlook anything in their evaluation process, and while Dybantsa's comments could have been courtesy of PR training, it's the right answer no matter what way you look at it.
