According to NBA Insider Jake Fischer, the Washington Wizards have shown interest in signing free agent guard Gabe Vincent.
Washington entered the offseason with one main hole to fill on the roster, with the massive hole in the frontcourt behind Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr.
With multiple avenues to address that need, whether by way of free agency or on the trade market, the Wizards clearly feel that there's no urgency to make a move right now.
However, the backup center options on the open market are quickly being taken off the board, and instead of being linked to a position of need, the Wizards are reportedly considering a move that not only comes out of left field, but doesn't exactly make sense.
Wizards signing Gabe Vincent doesn't fill any needs
The Wizards' roster is arguably the most stacked it has been in years, and there's an argument to make that Brian Keefe's rotation decisions are already going to be difficult.
With Trae Young and AD both expected to headline the roster next season alongside reigning No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa and an already talented young core, there aren't that many minutes to spare in D.C.
Tre Johnson, Will Riley, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington and Cam Whitmore will already be fighting for rotation minutes, and adding Gabe Vincent only makes the headache worse.
Vincent isn't a bad player by any means, and he proved with his run with the Miami Heat that he can be relied on in big minutes, but he's failed to provide that same proof since departing from South Beach and bouncing around the league,
Vincent is coming off a career-worst season since entering the league, where he averaged 4.4 points, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 rebounds on 35.2% shooting from the field and 34.1% from three.
At 30, Vincent doesn't fit the timeline of the Wizards; he's not the most experienced vet that can justify him filling a roster spot, and without a need for an extra guard, it makes the team's interest in Vincent confusing.
A reunion with Russell Westbrook has already been floated around the rumor mill, and while he doesn't fit an immediate need either, the former MVP at least offers some upside that makes sense as to why he'd be getting minutes.
Vincent would likely not even crack the rotation, so why Washington is showing interest in a pointless signing rather than addressing the need in the frontcourt is a bit questionable.
