The Washington Wizards started their offseason off with a bang when they landed CJ McCollum and Kelly Olynyk from the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and draft compensation.
Washington quickly elected to offload the newly acquired veteran big man to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for a pair of former first-round picks in Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley.
Following the addition of Cam Whitmore, Washington found themselves in position to make tough roster decisions to get the roster back down to size which eventually led to the buyouts of Marcus Smart, Richaun Holmes and Wesley.
Throughout the moves, McCollum still remains on the Wizards roster as the 2025-26 season looms around the corner and while the odds are stacked against general manager Will Dawkins to offload the guard's steep contract, there could be a last resort that Washington could look into.
As we know, another rebuilding team that has made some headlines this offseason is the Portland Trail Blazers.
Portland started their offseason off with the pre-draft move to land Jrue Holiday from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Anfernee Simons, who many believed warranted a much larger return than a 35-year-old defensive-minded guard.
Despite that, the Trail Blazers opted that the move would be beneficial for what they're building under head coach Chauncey Billups and pulled the trigger.
The Blazers didn't end there, though. General manager Joe Cronin followed up the move to bring a familiar face back to Portland by signing Trail Blazers legend Damian Lillard to a three-year, $42 million contract.
Lillard, who's currently recovering from a torn achilles injury, lands back in Portland after being shockingly stretched and waived by the Milwaukee Bucks earlier in the offseason.
The veteran guard will likely miss the majority of the 2025-26 NBA season, if not the entirety.
That leads us to the Wizards and another former Trail Blazer star, CJ McCollum.
Looking back at the Deni Avdija deal, it's clear that the Wizards and Trail Blazers have a history of making trades and considering how Avidja's development in the Western Conference is looking, it feels safe to say the Blazers owe the Wizards a favor.
Perhaps Portland would be interested in acquiring another veteran to add to their backcourt.
With the Wizards needing front court help and the Trail Blazers potentially in need of a guard (although they have plenty of options), maybe a McCollum for Jerami Grant swap could make sense?
Any potential deal is highly unlikely, but if the Blazers were interested in continuing their reunion movements, McCollum would be a solid choice to do exactly that.
