The Washington Wizards rebuild was long overdue when the team's front office finally came to the harsh reality that a restart was needed.
Unfortunately, at this point, the team's rebuild is close to running it's course with not much to show for it.
Washington has taken several swings in the NBA Draft over the last few years with an abundance of selections made in the lottery, including the likes of Alex Sarr with the No. 2 overall pick and the recent pick of Tre Johnson at No. 6 overall this past offseason.
Despite that, the Wizards still don't have a clear cornerstone to build around and to make matters worse, several of their recent selections look like players who very could find themselves involved in future trades if they don't show promise sooner rather than later.
However, the extended time of rebuilding with little to show for it isn't even the pressing issue for the Wizards rebuild moving forward.
Instead, it's the time that the Wizards don't have anymore that is making the next steps of their rebuild vital to the future.
NBA's efforts to prevent tanking could impact Wizards
Tanking has never been anything to celebrate for anyone in the league office; only for fanbases with the chance to land top tier talent in the NBA Draft.
Nonetheless, with the ongoing issues of team's tanking efforts ruining the product the NBA puts together on a nightly basis, the league has began to explore ways to prevent tanking moving forward.
Based on ESPN"s NBA Insider Shams Charania's recent update into the league's plans, the Wizards rebuild has to come to a close soon.
Shams: NBA looking into ways to prevent teams from tanking.

Proposed ideas include:
- Limiting pick protections to either top 4 or 14 and higher
- Not allowing a team to draft in the top 4 in consecutive years
- Locking lottery positions after March 1
The above changes could play a major factor in the way team's approach rebuilding for years to come if these new ideas are implemented.
Of the changes, a team like the Wizards not being able to select in the top 4 of the draft in consecutive years would play a major factor into the direction of tanking for BVA reans,
Beyond that, lottery positions being locked after March 1 would also shake up the way team's approach the season, not just tanking.
All that to say, the Wizards rebuild is far from reaching the light at the end of the tunnel, but if Washington doesn't find a way to get closer to the end, the team will be setback from contending for even longer than originally expected.
