The Washington Wizards have continued to make moves this offseason as they alter their roster ahead of next season.
Between the additions of CJ McCollum, Malaki Branham and Cam Whitmore through the trade market, the signings of Marvin Bagley III and Anthony Gill and the incoming rookie class, the Wizards have once again found themseleves over the limit of standard NBA contracts.
With 16 standard contracts currently on the roster, over-exceeding the NBA limit of 15, Washington has all but guaranteed that there are more moves to come.
Looking at the current structure of the roster, there are many players that you can all but guarentee to be on the roster come opening night.
Obviously, the young core of Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Kyshawn George and Cam Whitmore are safe.
Even AJ Johnson falls on that list of players safe barring an unforseen trade that includes the guard.
Looking at veterans on steep contracts such as McCollum and Khris Middleton, the Wizards seem unlikely to be able to move on from them ahead of the season, even if they wanted to.
Which leads us to which players could be let go in order for the Wizards to shrink their roster down to size? Let's dicuss it.
G Dillon Jones
Dillon Jones lands on this list solely due to the underwhelming chance that he's able to develop into a serviceable player for the Wizards.
Jones was selected in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft after four solid seasons at Weber State. However, since entering the league he hasn't gotten much of an opportunity to see the floor and make an impact.
Typically, a team like the Wizards would be an ideal landing spot for a player like Jones to land, but with the surplus of backcourt talent in Washington, odds are he won't see the floor.
F Anthony Gill
Anthony Gill just got re-signed to the Wizards after being waived last month. The forward is the move that put Washington in this roster predicament and despite that, there's still no guarentee he'll be on this roster moving forward.
At 32, Gill doesn't fit the timeline of the Wizards future and even if he's solely on the roster for the leadership or locker room prescence, how far can that carry him?
Whether the Wizards signed Gill to be a camp body or on the roster for next season is unknown, but regardless he finds himself on this list.
G Malaki Branham
Malaki Branham is another former first-round pick to land on this list. The Wizards acquired Branham from the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kelly Olynyk. Along with Branham, Washington landed Blake Wesley, who they've already opted to part ways with.
Branham has certainly showed more upside through his first three seasons in the league, but if it comes down to roster cuts and he's not impressing, it likely won't be a tough decision for Washington to make.
