The Washington Wizards are once again in a position to land a top prospect this offseason after securing a top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Still, nobody knows exactly who the team is targeting, and there's a good chance nobody will until the draft order is finalized.
And while no target has been revealed, general manager Will Dawkins kept it real when asked about the team's NBA Draft priority by The Athletic's David Aldridge ahead of the offseason.
Wizards are simply hoping to get lucky
When asked about the team's top objective this offseason, Dawkins gave a blunt response that puts into perspective exactly what Washington hopes to find in the NBA Draft.
“The draft is a little further [away], but the priority on May 10th is just [to] get lucky," Dawkin said. "Get lucky. The way I look at it is: We're already fortunate enough to add a top-five player in this draft.
Dawkins hopes to get lucky, and obviously, the luckiest outcome would be the team landing the No. 1 overall pick and the opportunity to select BYU's AJ Dybantsa, but the GM also made a point to temper expectations, while adding comfort to the fanbase.
"I feel very confident that our staff will be able to pick the best player if we have 5. I'm very comfortable at 5. It's the most likely outcome. There's a 48 percent chance we're picking at 5, and our fans should be excited about who we add."
The Wizards' decision-maker also enlightened the fanbase on how he views the upcoming offseason.
"The way I look at it is: We also have a 14 percent chance to do better at 1 and a 27 percent chance to be [in the] top two and over 35 percent chance to add [a] top-three [pick]. Those are pretty good odds, knowing that you're already sitting at 5. So we're excited about the draft.”
Rergardless of the odds, there's a 100% chance the team adds a difference-maker this offseason.
Washington will land a top talent
It's not clear who the team will add to their future plans on draft night, but it is clear that whoever they add will have the upside to be a cornerstone for the organization.
This is a fully loaded draft, and with several blue-chip prospects, even outside of Dybantsa, Washington is in a prime position to cap off their rebuild with a top talent.
Adding a top prospect alongside an already stacked young roster and a superstar duo of Anthony Davis and Trae Young only adds to the reasons why the Wizards and their fanbase should be extremely hopeful about what's to come.
