The Washington Wizards announced on Wednesday that the team will be adding two more games to the schedule this season after being eliminated from the NBA Cup.
I know, this may not be news that fans wanted to hear after continously watching their favorite team stack up losses. However, their losses on the season are the main reason for why they are adding on two more regular season games.
After losing all four of their games in the NBA Cup Group Play, the Wizards were eliminated from the league's in-season tournament. In turn, the team was forced to schedule two more games to replace what would have been tournament games.
That said, here's a look at the added games and who the Wizards will be playing in each.
December 13: @ Cleveland Cavaliers
The news keeps getting worse for fans of the Wizards after this schedule update comes right after a 31-point loss to the Cavaliers on Tuesday night. Nonetheless, on a positive note, the Wizards will have a chance to get redemption against Cleveland on the road.
And even if they fail to do so, they'll atleast have a chance to put up better numbers than they did in their most recent lackluster outing vs. the Cavs.
December 15: vs. Boston Celtics
The second matchup that the team added to their schedule is a showdown against the defending champions. Washington will host the Boston Celtics on December 15th. The Wizards have lost each of their two showdowns with the Celtics this season, but they'll have the opportunity to write their wrongs with another battle in a couple of weeks.
As the old saying goes, third time's the charm? Well, maybe not, but the Wizards will have a chance to make that saying true if they can find a way to upset the Celtics.
Nonetheless, adding two more games to the Wizards schedule was inevitable regardless if they were able to clinch a spot in the NBA Cup or not. And while there's not much positivity surrounding Washington, or hope that they'll win either of these games, it could be better for the future if they don't.
The Cooper Flagg sweepstakes are still up in the air and right now the Wizards have a solid lead in the pursuit of securing their future cornerstone. So while two additional games may seem like a headache to fans hoping the offseason would get here quicker, this could be looked at as a positive.
