The Washington Wizards are in store for a pivotal offseason as the team looks to utilize the new superstar duo of Trae Young and Anthony Davis to take a major step next season.

With the young roster on the talent mixed with the healthy mixture of new win-now veterans, and the opportunity to land a top prospect in the 2026 NBA Draft this offseason, the Wizards find themselves in the perfect position to put together a dream offseason in the coming months.

And while that dream is still obtainable, a recent development across the college basketball landscape just put a wrinkle in the team’s plans, with head coach target Michael Malone being hired by the North Carolina Tar Heels

Wizards fanbase dreamed about a Michael Malone hiring

Brian Keefe has plenty of fans across the organization and fanbase, and while he’s done a solid job for what the team has needed of him during his time in the DMV, the harsh reality is that if Washington truly is serious about contending in the East, they may need another voice of reason leading this surging squad.

The second-year head coach has proven to be a more than solid developmental coach, but in terms of competing for a playoff spot, the Wizards may be heading towards an offseason shake-up.

If that were to come into fruition, the team’s fanbase has been extremely vocal about former Nuggets coach Michael Malone being an ideal candidate for the job, especially considering his defensive mindset and how it could match up well with a roster personnel filled with names like Davis, Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, and even Kyshawn George.

Now, the team finds itself in a position where if Keefe is the odd man out this offseason, they may have to look elsewhere to fill that void.

Wizards will have plenty of solid candidates to target

Obviously, Malone was the favorite for many supporting Washington, but there are still plenty of solid names who are expected to be available this offseason.

Between candidates like Tom Thibodeau, Taylor Jenkins, and top assistants like Sam Cassell, Washington will have several targets for the job.

Not to mention, there could be several high-end options who find themselves available as the coaching carousel continues in the coming months.

Regardless, the team will be forced to pivot if Malone was atop their head coaching board entering the offseason.
