The Washington Wizards trying regular season came with one positive, and that was the potential to land a top draft pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
The only issue, though, was the cloud hanging over the team's head throughout the season about the looming possibility that their first-round pick could be handed over to the New York Knicks if it conveyed anywhere past No. 8 overall.
It may not seem like a time to let out a sigh of relief with the NBA Draft Lottery looming and the team's track record of bad luck, but it's time that this organization and its fanbase celebrate small victories.
And with the nightmare scenario of forfeiting their top pick this offseason officially out of the realm of possibilities, Washington can comfortably look ahead to putting together their dream offseason.
Wizards have a chance at landing the No. 1 overall pick
Washington has held out hope that the team could potentially land the top pick this offseason in a draft class filled with talented prospects like AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer, Darryn Peterson, and even Darius Acuff Jr., whom star guard Trae Young has gone on record to state he's a fan of.
Following the team's blowout loss to the Chicago Bulls, the Wizards have secured their positioning at the bottom of the NBA standings, which ties them for the best chance to earn the No. 1 overall pick this offseason alongside the Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets.
The Wizards have lost 129-98, dropping to 17-62 and guaranteeing that they will keep their protected first-round pick. Even if Washington wins its final three games, it cannot finish worse than third worst in the league standings and cannot fall past seventh in the draft order.…

With the league looking to put an end to tanking once and for all moving forward, there may not be a better time for the Wizards to secure a top prospect, especially if they hope to be in playoff contention as soon as next season.
Washington can turn a nightmare into a dream
If the Wizards found themselves in a position to hand over their first-round pick this offseason, there's no denying that it would have been an absolute nightmare for the team.
Losing their top pick would have made the struggles of this season seem like a waste. Fortunately, the team doesn't have to worry about that nightmare scenario anymore.
Instead, the Wizards have the the opportunity to secure what could be the final piece of the puzzle in their rebuild with a top pick that could help them get one step closer to their goal of competing.
Looking ahead, Washington is in a prime position to put together their dream offseason and put Wizards basketball back on the map.
