Washington Wizards Mailbag Monday: Bradley Beal Contract Talks, KD2DC Options, More

We’re back with another edition of Washington Wizards Mailbag Monday.

If you’d like us to answer your question on next week’s edition, feel free to let us know @WizofAwes.

Today’s questions come from Twitter and Reddit.

If there’s anyone on the Washington Wizards’ roster that I’m certainly not worried about, it’s John Wall.

Wall is a big dude — he’s probably among the three or four biggest point guards in the league. He’s put on a lot of muscle since he entered the league in 2010.

Did he put on some weight during the summer? Probably. But once training camp starts, I’m sure Wall will be ready to go.

Getting in basketball shape is tough and none of these guys are in that sort of shape during the summer. Wall will be fine.

Kevin Durant is their number one option and there’s no doubt about that. But, the chances of him leaving a stacked Oklahoma City Thunder team are slim. They’ve been to the NBA Finals before and they finally have some depth this upcoming season.

So, let’s pretend he chooses to stay in OKC. Most Wizards fans think that would be a disastrous situation, but it really wouldn’t be.

Players are going to become available via trade that aren’t currently available.

For instance, if the Sacramento Kings are awful again (and I think they will be), then the DeMarcus Cousins really has to go. Another losing season will only cause more tension between Boogie and the rest of the franchise. At that point, it wouldn’t surprise me if he becomes available. Washington will have room to absorb him.

But, as far as free agency, the Wizards could target multiple players. Al Horford will be available and other role players like Ryan Anderson will become available too.

The Wizards are a destination. Wall and Beal are only going to get better. They’re going to have options, even if KD decides to stay in OKC.

To answer your question: my plan A would be to target another star player through trade (could Kevin Love become available?) and my plan B would be to sign multiple, solid, role players.

Absolutely.

After having a lot of success with Paul Pierce at the four spot, Washington went out and acquired Jared Dudley through trade from the Milwaukee Bucks. While Dudley will miss some time early in the season, I definitely expect Washington to utilize Otto Porter at the four in spurts.

They also signed multiple wing players this summer that could share the court together.

Randy Wittman could play Wall, Gary Neal, Beal and Alan Anderson together with another big. He’s finally got some options and I think we’ll see the Wizards play a lot of small-ball this upcoming NBA season.

On /r/NBA, there is a rising consensus/opinion stating that Beal is overrated. His isn’t deserving of a max extension. In my opinion, I would give him the max extension now and that he is slightly overrated by fans (but is still top SGs in the league). Would you all agree/disagree that he is overrated and/or deserving of a max contract?

Will Otto Porter bust out the Rec Specs?

Will Humphries be the starter during the season? – via Gr8WallofChinatown

Take a look at who’s getting max contract extensions. Everyone is getting a max deal before the salary cap rises. I mean, Enes Kanter is going to make a billion dollars.

So, simply put, he’s worth it just because the market sets the value super high.

Is he worth it as a player, currently? Probably not. But, Beal is only 22-years-old and has shown an ability to perform well during the playoffs. His skill-set meshes extremely well with Wall. At this point, he’s arguably the best young two guard in the league. He’s going to get paid.

I don’t know if Beal is overrated, though. He’s never made the All-Star team. How can he be overrated if he’s not getting individual accomplishments? So no, I’d probably say he’s not overrated.

Otto better bust out the rec specs. They’re awesome.

Kris Humphries is a solid spot-starter, but I’d be worried if he started all 82-games. As much as I love Hump’s game, he’s still somewhat limited. He can’t shoot the three and he struggles to defend dynamic fours.

What do you think of this virtual reality stuff? – via SonOfSkipBaeless

To those who don’t know what he’s talking about, the Washington Wizards (and Mystics, Capitals) are getting virtual reality technology.

This is supposedly going to help the players get a better idea of virtually (no pun intended) everything. The coaches and management staff are also going to use it for player development and plays. It can’t possibly hurt, right?

I’m glad the Wizards were the first team to implement this cool addition. Times are changing, man. Teams are always looking to get an edge.

Maybe if Ernie Grunfeld had this technology it would’ve helped him see that Jan Vesely actually isn’t good at basketball.
